India’s Summer Travel Boom Signals Shift Toward Luxury, Family Vacations and Experience-Driven Tourism

India’s summer travel trends show a strong shift toward luxury stays, family vacations, and experience-based tourism. Cleartrip data reveals sharp growth in five-star hotel bookings, rising domestic travel to Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities, increasing female solo travel, and growing international interest across Asia, Europe, and Africa.

India’s summer travel landscape is undergoing a decisive transformation as travellers increasingly move away from budget-focused trips and short getaways, embracing premium stays, curated experiences, and comfort-led vacations, according to new data released by Cleartrip.

The data highlights a sharp surge in luxury hospitality demand, with bookings for five-star hotels rising by 108.2 percent this summer. Overall hotel bookings recorded a growth of more than 80 percent, making accommodation the fastest-growing travel segment. Air travel also witnessed a significant uptick, with flight bookings increasing by over 20 percent, while bus travel expanded by more than 35 percent, reflecting a broad-based rise in mobility across transport modes.

Family travel emerged as a dominant driver of this seasonal surge. Family hotel bookings increased dramatically by 124.9 percent, underscoring a growing preference for collective vacations focused on shared experiences and extended stays.

Domestic tourism continued to strengthen, with travellers increasingly opting for Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities. Destinations such as Jaipur, Lucknow, Udaipur, Rishikesh, and Varanasi recorded strong demand, reflecting a shift toward culturally rich and leisure-oriented travel within India. At the same time, Northeast India is gaining rapid popularity as a preferred travel region, with Dibrugarh, Dimapur, Imphal, and Agartala reporting notable growth in bookings.

On the international front, Bali emerged as the most preferred destination among young Indian travellers, followed by Phuket, Kuala Lumpur, Dubai, and Singapore. These destinations continue to attract strong demand due to their accessibility, affordability, and tourism infrastructure.

Within India, Bengaluru has emerged as the top domestic destination for both Gen Z and Millennials, largely due to its role as a transit hub and starting point for road trips and nearby leisure getaways.

Air travel infrastructure developments have also contributed to changing travel patterns, with airports in Navi Mumbai, Darbhanga, Leh, and Gorakhpur witnessing strong demand growth. International travel interest has expanded as well, with rising preference for destinations such as Nairobi, Frankfurt, Guangzhou, Riyadh, Lisbon, Milan, and Tokyo.

The report also referenced “5 Hidden Underground Cities Across The World That Will Amaze You,” reflecting growing curiosity among travellers toward unique global attractions.

Overall, the data signals a structural shift in Indian travel behaviour, driven by rising aspirations, expanding connectivity, and a strong preference for experience-rich domestic and international tourism.
